Welcome to the XMedia @ GT website!

XMedia is for students who want to express themselves with both digital and physical materials. It is for those who like to explore, play, tinker, invent, and build; for those who feel at home in a giant toybox where felt, paint, and sheets of acrylic happily co-exist with blinking lights, resistors, and code. Is XMedia for you?

XMedia is the Experimental Media (LCC 6318) and Experimental Digital Art (LCC 4730) courses taught jointly by Prof. Ali Mazalek in the Digital Media (grad) and Computational Media (undergrad) programs. XMedia examines physical/digital co-design and physical computing in the context of expressive/artistic practices. XMedia provides an informal, hands-on, and team-based learning environment, in which students work together to develop the conceptual, aesthetic, and technical basics of physical/digital co-design through the creation of expressive pieces for installation or performance.

The theoretical and technical core remains stable from one year to the next, but each course provides a unique experience that is shaped by the given theme and the dynamics of the student group. The course is often taught in collaboration with other courses, e.g. in industrial design and architecture. Feel free to browse past XMedia courses linked from this site.
